Principles for Safer Spaces at Academic Conferences

Event: NEFK2025
11-14 June 2024
Turku, Finland

  1. Respect and Openness

– Approach others with an open mind and show kindness.
– Allow everyone to be themselves and respect diversity.
– Use inclusive language and avoid discriminatory remarks.

  1. Equality and Non-Hierarchical Interaction

– Ensure that all voices are valued equally, regardless of academic status or background.
– Avoid power imbalances, such as dominating discussions or dismissing others’ experiences.

  1. Emotional Safety and Personal Boundaries

– Do not make assumptions about participants’ experiences, identities, or opinions.
– Allow individuals to ”pass” on questions or topics that feel uncomfortable.
– If you unintentionally offend someone, apologize and listen to their concerns.

  1. Active Listening and Constructive Dialogue

– Listen attentively without interrupting.
– Ask questions with a genuine intent to understand, rather than to challenge.
– Use specific examples and define key terms to avoid misunderstandings.

  1. Confidentiality and Safe Sharing of Experiences

– Participants should be able to share personal experiences without fear of them being shared outside the space.
– What is said in the room stays in the room unless otherwise agreed upon.

  1. Handling Conflicts and Criticism

– Discussions can be critical but must always be respectful.
– If conflicts arise, resolve them through dialogue rather than confrontation.
– Feedback should be constructive and directed at ideas, not individuals.
