Enjoy a traditional Finnish sauna on the island of Ruissalo (Runsala), followed by a refreshing swim. The island of Runsala is a stunning nature destination right near the city. It is a popular spot for leisure activities, with its scenic nature trails, and its groves in Ruissalo form Finland’s most valuable protected oak forest area.

Snacks and a non-alcoholic drink included, transport at own cost (bus no. 8 takes you from the city center directly to the camping ground).

Please bring a bath towel and your swimming gear!

Join Dr. John Björkman, a newly appointed Doctor of Philosophy in Nordic Folkloristics, on a guided tour of mystical sites in the nearby Finnish forests—places explored in his dissertation.

Bio: John Björkman (Ph.D.) is a postdoctoral researcher in folkloristics at the University of Turku, specialized in sacred sites of folk belief. His doctoral dissertation “Healing Springs and Haunted Woods. Sacred sites of folk belief and spatial order in Southwest Finnish village societies” (https://www.doria.fi/handle/10024/190033) studies the locations of 120 sacred natural sites in their 19th century village contexts. He is currently working on a 3-year research project, “The Sacred Forests Around Us”, with the aim to chart the development of sacred forest sites in Finland from prehistory to current times.

The beautiful island of Seili (Själö) is known for its history as home to Finland’s best-known leper hospital and mental asylum in the 1600s and 1700s. Seili church and surrounding graveyard still remind of the destinies of Seili’s patients. The mentally ill were treated on Seili until 1960s, when the former asylum was converted for the use of the Archipelago Research Institute, Centre for Environmental Research of the University of Turku.

Price includes sea trips on M/s Norrskär, guided tour on the island, buffet lunch and coffee, coffee on board, sweet or savoury snack on board. Departure at 9.30 at Läntinen Rantakatu 37 and return at 18.15 to the same place.

Paimio Sanatorium designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto in the early 1930s is one of the most internationally renowned buildings in Finland. The half-day excursion includes a guided tour, lunch and an optional forest walk. We begin with a guided tour (90 min) about the architecture, innovations, and everyday life of the former tuberculosis sanatorium. After this we will have lunch at Restaurant Toivo at the Sanatorium. We will end the excursion with a walk (2,6 km) in the surrounding pine forest. The forest with its’ mossy rocks and clear-water creek is an essential part of the Sanatorium.
